Game Day

Breakers vs Cairns....

The day started off with sleeping in at Paul and Liz's place till about 7:30am...this may not sound like sleeping in but for me it is an hour or so past normal:)

Got a nice shower and head down stairs to see if any of the Blackwell's were up. I started writing my blog and then Matt and Kate joined me in the courtyard while I was writing this blog about the game.

They are the cutest kids that I have ever met and so interested in what I am doing with either my blog or just in general. I love the curiosity!!!

In the morning was shoot around at the stadium. I joined Paul to head over for the end of shoot around and see how the guys were feeling. Shortly after we got there Liz showed up with all of the kids and a massive fresh bakery prepared box of brownies and ice cream.....if only I could start every day that way!!

After the players were through, some of the guys asked if I would like to shoot free throws with them but in a contest. I was all in for some competitive playing!

The game goes like this: There is always 1 point to start off the game in the pot of points. Every time a player hits a free throw it adds to the pot. Once someone misses that player takes all of the points in the pot. The magic number that knocked you out of the game was 15....long story short, I came out on top victorious that day:)

I came back with Kirk after the shoot around and had lunch and did some stuff around their condo. Did I mention how amazing the views and location of their place is?? Kirk was a bit tired so I did some TV watching and such while he took a nap. He got up and was ready for the game.

This was one of only 5-6 times that the game had been sold out for the Breakers!! This doesn't sound that large but the club hasn't been around that long. I was with Paul after Kirk went to get ready for the game. Paul was running around and making sure that everything was ready and that everyone was taken care for tickets and special requests. I have to say that he and Liz are some of the hardest working and most dedicated to their team than any owner that I have seen. Just wonderful to see and you can tell that the guys, coaches and everyone who comes to the game can feel.

Before the game I was able to meet and sit with the owner of Barter Card. It is tough to explain his business that he created but imagine that you want services from an accountant and you are a hair dresser. You are short on cash, but can give your services as compensation. His $600 bill and your $10 hair cuts don't match up. In order to pay that bill off you and he, along with a network of many other businesses come together and use each other services in a barter system. Leaves more capital in the small business owners hand allowing to use it in the right places to grow their business. Brilliant idea!

Ok...back to the game. It was a great atmosphere and the game started off slow for the Breakers. They fell behind by about 14 points in the first half but scraped back to be with in 8 points before the half. The start of the second half was outstanding. They were able to switch their style and intensity of the game and out play Cairns at every facet of the game. They took the lead with about 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter and never looked back. They won the game by 7 and took the top of the division. This win secured a nice lead in the race for the division and possibly home court advantage for the Breakers.

Later that night after the game, we went to Marc's Bar and Restaurant. It is a great place with a live DJ, great music, and really good brews. The Marc's Gold and many others were nice to try for the night while we celebrated the nice win and each other.

Sam, Jared and LIz were already there and we were able to share a couple of hours with them before it was time to get home at a decent hour to enjoy the next day at Waiheke Island.........
